Like many first-time parents, I started paying closer attention to the world around me—the foods we were eating, the products we were using, and the environment my babies were growing up in. But what began as a few small tweaks turned into a complete shift in how I view health, wellness, and the home.

This is the story of how my low-tox journey began.

It Started With My Children

You suddenly go from thinking about your own needs to thinking about someone else’s 24/7. That was the turning point for me.

I remember wondering:
“What’s actually in the products I’m using on their skin?”
“Is our tap water safe to drink, even after boiling?”
“Why does this baby wash have 20+ ingredients?” Even the recommended brands from health professionals had ingredients I couldn’t understand.

Those questions led me down a rabbit hole of research into toxins in everyday products: especially those marketed to mums and children.

The First Swaps: Food & Baby Products

I started small—looking at what I was feeding my children and what I was putting on their skin.

Baby + Toddler Products:

I swapped out baby wipes with harsh preservatives for water-based or wipes with ingredients I could understand. I replaced plastic baby bottles for glass options. I began choosing natural baby washes free from synthetic fragrances and parabens.

It didn’t happen overnight—but with every choice, I felt more empowered.

Food:

I became more conscious about choosing whole, minimally processed foods, avoiding artificial additives and preservatives where I could. I also started shopping more locally and reading labels carefully (something I never used to do!).

Detoxing the Home: Cleaning & Water

The next stage of my journey was all about the home environment—what we were breathing in, cleaning with, and drinking.

Cleaning Products:

The smell of strong cleaners once made me feel like the house was “clean” until I learned how many of them contain endocrine disruptors. I began using DIY solutions with vinegar, bicarb soda, and essential oils.

Water Filtration: Starting Small, Thinking Big

One of the biggest changes I made early on was switching to filtered water. At first, I invested in a water filter jug with a carbon filter, a more affordable and accessible option that allowed me to reduce chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and other impurities from our daily drinking water.

It was a simple change, but one that gave me so much peace of mind, especially knowing how sensitive little bodies are to environmental toxins.

As part of our long-term low-tox goals, I’m planning to upgrade to a reverse osmosis system. It’s a more comprehensive form of filtration that removes even more contaminants, however it is an investment.

For now, our water jug filter has been a fantastic step, and it just goes to show that you don’t need to do everything at once. Every swap counts.

A Lifestyle, Not a Trend

Low-tox living isn’t about being perfect. It’s not about fear or guilt, either. It’s about being informed and doing the best you can with what you have.

For me, this journey has been about:

  • Feeling confident in the products I use around my children
  • Reducing waste and choosing better for the planet
  • Finding peace of mind by doing the best I can for my family

Why I’m Sharing This

I started this blog because I know how overwhelming it can feel when you first start learning about toxins in everyday products. That’s why I want to share what’s worked for my family, and to help other parents feel more empowered, not pressured.
